What is MOTTAINAI?

What is MOTTAINAI?

“MOTTAINAI” is a Japanese word which roughly translates to “what a waste”, and conveys a sense that we should not throw away anything while it is still useful.

Now the word has come to embody a spirit of conservation and sustainable living, representing the three environmental R's; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle; as well as a deep Respect for the environment.
The introduction of the “MOTTAINAI” concept to the Western world is largely the work of Kenyan Nobel laureate and leader of the Greenbelt Movement Wangari Maathai, who was deeply inspired by the word when she visited Japan in 2005.

Touched by the underlying respect it carries for the valuable natural resources that surround us, Wangari Maathai resolved to spread “MOTTAINAI” as a keyword for environmental conservation.
